Today, a committee for health affairs in the House of Representatives, chaired by Representative Dr. Ashraf Hatem, was convened, based on the text of Article 246 of the House of Representatives bylaws, to explore and discuss the issue of medical tourism, in light of Egypt’s many therapeutic and hospital sites, and its positive impact on the Egyptian economy.

This came during a request for a briefing submitted by Representative Khalifa Radwan, representative of Sohag Governorate, Gerga Center, in the presence of Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population, and Dr. Muhammad Al-Wahsh, Undersecretary of the Health Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives.

Dr. Muhammad Al-Wahsh said that medical tourism has become an important industry, and today the world is moving towards medical tourism.

Al-Wahsh continued: “The issue of medical tourism is not the responsibility of the Ministry of Health alone, it is an important part, but also the responsibility of the private sector, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has a special role in solving the problem of delayed visas, as well as the Ministry of Tourism and Tourism Development, and there are 5 specialties in the world in medical tourism.

Muhammad Al-Wahsh explained the importance of developing and rehabilitating the infrastructure for medical tourism, and removing obstacles in front of it to advance it and so that Egypt would have an advanced system in medical tourism. Institutions and the private sector, and everyone sits at one table to discuss everything related to the file.

During the meeting, the representative of the Ministry of Tourism added to the importance of teamwork to advance this system, saying: “We have the most skilled doctors and highly qualified hospitals in Egypt that can start operating medical tourism, and this file is related to the ministries of health, tourism and local development, and there is coordination between the ministries of health and tourism and antiquities And some problems must be solved to advance this system, because medical tourism is a large development system.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Sobky, Chairman of the Public Authority for Health Care, added, during the meeting, that the authority has state-of-the-art facilities developed by the state, and the challenges are known, including visas for some countries, and facilitating the entry of those coming for treatment.

In conclusion of the convened committee, Dr. Ashraf Hatem, Chairman of the Health Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives, indicated that the committee will hold a special session to listen to the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourism Promotion Authority after the formation of the Supreme Committee, which will handle the medical tourism file, and called on the government to present a plan on health tourism and present it to the public.
