Egypt ranked 4th in region, 26th worldwide for medical tourism: Health minister

Minister of Health Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar said on Wednesday that Egypt ranked fourth regionally and 26th worldwide in the Medical Tourism Index.

Abdel-Ghaffar made his remarks during the inauguration of the Egyptian Medical Syndicate’s Conference on Medical Tourism, which is taking place under the slogan of “medicine and tourism in the land of Egypt.”

The components of medical tourism include doctors, hospitals, tourist services and treatment costs.

“Egypt has highly-qualified doctors, excellent hospitals and tourist and ancient attractions in addition to the moderate weather,” he said.

The only thing Egypt lacks is unified treatment costs for medical tourists, he added.

Abdel-Ghaffar revealed that the prime minister will establish a committee soon to oversee the improvement of medical tourism in Egypt, working alongside groups like the Doctors Syndicate.

The health minister also criticised the media in Egypt for covering medical issues unprofessionally, saying the media focused on and amplified individual cases in a way that impacts medical tourism negatively.

In the Middle East region, Egypt only ranked behind Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Oman in the index’s 2020-2021 edition.

Worldwide, the top five countries for medical tourism were Canada, Singapore, Japan, Spain and the UK.
